What is white noise?

White noise is the combination of all the sound frequencies a human can hear. Certain sounds in nature, such as large waterfalls or heavy rains, produce white noise because they contain a very broad range of sound frequencies. It is referred to as “white” because it is similar to white light, which contains all the color frequencies.

What does white noise sound like?

White noise produces a sound similar to rushing air. It is completely unobtrusive so that after a short time, the listener no longer consciously hears it, although it continues to mask unwanted noise.

How do natural sound and white noise machines create privacy and sound masking?

Sound masking and privacy can be achieved by adding an unobtrusive background noise, commonly referred to as white noise, to the setting. White noise is a broad-band, random sound that does not carry information, is unobtrusive and reduces interference from distracting speech and noise. White noise machines can be used inside the room, or be placed outside an office door to prevent passersby from hearing conversation inside the office.

What features do your sound machines offer?

We feature both basic white noise machines and natural sound machines. Our natural sound machines also include "pure" white noise settings, such as Rain and Waterfalls, as well as additional soothing mood sounds.

The Marpac Sound Screen 980 and Marpac Sound Screen 580 are basic white noise sound machines that create the continuous sound of rushing air to provide privacy and mask unwanted noise. They produce sound mechanically, similar to a fan. They can mask intermittent and continuous noises up to approximately 63 and 57 decibels, respectively. This is the approximate equivalent of nearby conversations or light office equipment.

Our digital machines can mask noises up to approximately 79 decibels, which is helpful for masking louder sounds or when greater privacy is required. Marsona TSC-330 is compact and travel-sized, yet offers the high quality sounds and noise masking capabilities of full sized sound conditioners. Marsona DS-600 offers the six most requested sounds, including a thunderous Waterfall, a Spring Rain a babbling Brook and more. Our top of the line model, Marsona 1288, enables you to surround yourself with a personally customized sound environment white masking unwanted noise.

The digital machines we sell have been found to meet the highest level of standards for consumer sound machines. The benefits of our digital machines include many features. The digital sound machines do not loop, providing the listener with a continuously soothing listening experience. Shorter loops or poorly integrated loop ends can become annoying for the listener. The large speakers and enhanced volume settings enables the sound to remain clear and undistorted throughout the volume spectrum. Greater tone control enhances sound masking by enabling the user to match the tone on the sound machine to the tone of the unwanted noise.

We also offer the VoiceArrest Speech Privacy System and the Sonet Acoustic Privacy System. Both of these systems are helpful for cubicles and large office environments.

How are natural sound and white noise machines useful?

Our sound machines are useful in offices, healthcare institutions, therapy practices, hotels, day care settings, college dorms, and many other locations. They create office privacy and aid in concentration, relaxation and sleep, while masking bothersome sounds such as keyboard clicking, conversation, office equipment, street noise, televisions and stereos, barking dogs, snoring spouses, noisy neighbors, and air traffic. Our sound machines are portable and can be used when traveling to create a familiar environment while masking unwanted noise.

Where should I place the machine so others can not overhear conversations in my office?

For speech privacy, the machines should be placed outside of the office door or cubicle so that passersby only hear the white noise sound, not the conversation. This placment allows the machines to mask sound coming into the hallway from the offices. In order to prevent clients or patients in a waiting room from overhearing conversations in nearby offices, the machines should be placed in the waiting room.
